Great Works Series, Antigone

After viewing today's performance, there was one question that i still had that went unanswered. When a text is adapted for use in the theater, I know that most performances have to be reviewed to ensure that they keep the integrity of the work intact. I know for a fact that this is true with modern performances, my question is who ensures the integrity of the Great Works of Literature including Antigone?

  1. It is really hard to say who can ensure the integrity of the Great Works of Literature. As a director, I believe it is their responsibility to keep the integrity of story. With that said, directors also often put their own twist to their work to make it as much as their own as they possibly can and sometimes this will lead them off course.

  2. Well in my opinion. I believe that the performance did keep the integrity of the Great Works Literature. The language was different. The literature was much more densed and used words that would be used at the time. But I believe like the director of the performance stated. The only way to insure that the performance keeps the intergrity of the play is by critiques.

  4. I believe it is the job of the director/directors to know what is important, what can be cut out and what emotions the actors are suppose to give off. I thought the performance did well in keeping the integrity. I feel if I did not read the play before seeing it, I would have been lost in the beginning. Over all, the director should know how keep the piece's integrity.

  5. I agree with both Paloma and Kevin that the director chooses what is important and what isn't. The director has to figure out how to keep the integrity of the work while making it their own at the same time. Since every director is different their perspective of the play will be different because the angle they are looking at the play from varies. Like Kevin says the director "has creative control" over the work he/she has to bring to life.

  6. I believe that there is more than one person who must ensure the integrity of Antigone for Great Works of Literature. This responsibility is given to the director, the audience and professionals of this kind of literature such as yourself Dr. Sorin Cucu. As far as keeping the integrity for Antigone I believe the play did just that. Yes the play was kept short due to time limitations but the acting along with the terms were beyond suitable. The director has to do the most work to make sure that the play keeps its integrity but if the audience who read the play believes that it didn’t, then word of mouth will travel and no one will want to see the play.
